As Hurricane Helene intensifies in the western Caribbean, the Peach State is at risk for widespread power outages, wind damage and flash flooding, according to forecasters.
Weather experts and government officials advise Georgia residents to prepare before Helene makes landfall Thursday evening, expected to be a Category 3 hurricane when it reaches land. Preparation is essential to minimizing the impact of severe weather, officials say.
Here’s how you can stay ahead of the storm:
Create an emergency kit
Government officials say the following items are important to have handy:
3-day supply of water for evacuation, 2-week supply of water for home
Store non-perishable and/or easy-to-prepare food items
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
At least a one-week supply of medications and medical items
Sanitation and personal hygiene items
Copies of important family documents
Store cell phone chargers
Family and emergency contact information
Extra cash
Local map and radio
Secure Property
Keep trees and shrubs well trimmed to prevent substantial property damage
Place valuables and important documents in a waterproof container on the highest level of home
Use sandbags to reduce flood damage
Anchor or bring in any outdoor furniture that is not secure, including trash cans and decorations
Cover windows with hurricane shutters
Clear debris from gutters and drains
Review your insurance policy and talk to your insurance provider about flood damage
Have an evacuation plan
Fill gas tank(s)
Decide where and how to reconnect with family members
Know your evacuation zone
Be aware of the nearest shelter or hotel
Plan ahead for pets/service animals
Be ready for power outages
Charge up cellular devices and power banks in advance
Set refrigerator to the coldest setting temperature. Keep freezers closed to avoid food spoiling
Stock up on batteries and portable chargers
Stay away from downed power lines
Call 911 to report any fallen trees that are blocking roadways.
