Weather officials upgraded Tropical Storm Helene to a Hurricane Wednesday, September 25, 2024. There are hurricane watches, tropical storm watches and flood watches in effect across nearly all of Georgia until Friday, September 27.

Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency on Tuesday in anticipation for the impact of what is now Hurricane Helene, which is still expected to make landfall in Florida late Thursday before moving toward Georgia.

Middle Georgia schools, government offices and local businesses are bracing for the severe weather, with several already announcing closures for the week.

Here’s a list of school and office closure plans across Middle Georgia.

Bibb County

  • Academy for Classical Education: School canceled Thursday and Friday. Football game and homecoming activities will resume on October 11.
  • Bibb County Schools: All schools and offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday. All after-school athletic events and programs are canceled.
  • Cirrus Academy: School canceled Thursday and Friday. All after-school activities are canceled.
  • First Presbyterian Day School: Early dismissal on Thursday. Schools will be closed on Friday. Varsity football game rescheduled for Saturday.

  • Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority: All MTA buses will complete service early by 7 p.m. Thursday. Bus service will resume after 7:25 a.m. on Friday.

  • Mercer University: All Thursday evening in-person classes will move to online format. University offices will close at 5 p.m. Thursday. All Friday classes are canceled. University offices will be closed, but essential personnel should report to work as scheduled.

  • Middle Georgia Regional Library: All MGRL locations will close after 11 a.m. on Thursday and all day Friday.

  • Middle Georgia State University: MGA campus will close at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and will remain close on Friday. Limited campus services will be available during this time.

  • Mount de Sales Academy: Early dismissal Thursday at 11:45 a.m. School will remain closed on Friday. All after-school activities are canceled on Thursday and Friday.

  • St. Andrew Montessori School: Classes canceled Thursday and Friday.

  • Stratford Academy: Early dismissal Thursday. All after-school activities for Thursday are canceled. No school on Friday, but homecoming presentation and football game will continue, pending further notice.

  • Tattnall Square Academy: Early dismissal Thursday. Canceled classes on Friday. Varsity football game has been rescheduled to Saturday.

  • Wesleyan College: All in-person Thursday classes canceled after 5 p.m. School will be closed Friday.

  • Windsor Academy: Early dismissal Thursday at 12:30 p.m. After-school care and activities are canceled for Thursday. School will remain closed on Friday.

Crawford County

Houston County

  • Central Georgia Technical College: Early dismissal on Thursday. All classes canceled on Friday.
  • Chick-fil-A: All three restaurant locations in Warner Robins will close early at 3 p.m. Thursday. Open Friday at 10:30 a.m.
  • Houston County Schools: All Houston County after-school activities on Thursday are canceled. School will remain open on Thursday. All classes and after-school activities on Friday are canceled.
  • All non-essential offices in Warner Robins will close at noon on Thursday, and they will remain closed all day Friday.
  • Perry International Festival was set to happen Saturday but has been postponed.
  • A Warner Robins Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting scheduled for Thursday was moved to Oct. 3, and the Keep Warner Robins Beautiful Fall Shed Day scheduled for Friday was moved to Oct. 4.

Jones County

  • All Jones County Schools will operate as normal on Thursday, but all extra-curricular activities for Thursday afternoon are canceled. All schools will be closed on Friday. After school activities will be allowed on Friday, weather permitting

Monroe County

  • All Monroe County Schools will have early dismissal at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, and all after-school activities on Thursday have been canceled. Schools will be closed all day Friday.

Peach County

  • All Peach County Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. All after-school activities are canceled.
  • The Peach County High School football game and homecoming dance have been postponed for Saturday, September 28, at 12:00 PM.
