Second Americus officer dies in hospital
Jody Smith, campus safety officer for Georgia Southwestern State University, died in a Macon hospital on Thursday.
Smith and Americus policeman Nicholas Ryan Smarr both were shot Wednesday morning after responding to a 911 call about a domestic dispute off campus.
Smarr died hours after the shooting. Smith was taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, where he died about 5:30 p.m., according to a news release from the GBI. The two officers were close friends.
Smith had started working for the school in August after working for the Sumter County sheriff’s office as well as the Plains Police Department, the release said.
