There are so many stories to tell in Middle Georgia. Here’s how you can help us tell them

This spring, when the coronavirus was hammering the country’s economy and newspapers across the U.S. were firing or furloughing reporters, we asked for your help to keep our journalists in the field.

You responded, and we are so thankful for your support, which helped sustain our newsroom during a very difficult time.

Since then, a lot has happened.

Following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, we covered protests and rallies in Macon as the community demanded change.

As COVID-19 cases in Middle Georgia spiked again this summer, we talked with experts, provided you with daily updates and explained complicated state data so you could make informed decisions about your, and our family’s, health.

During the most anticipated election in decades, we published a voter’s guide, covered debates and rallies and wrote about the voting process during a pandemic. Over the past week, we kept you up-to-date with the latest news on vote counts and prepared you for two Senate runoff elections.

But my favorite stories, the ones that truly resonated with me, were about the people who shape our community in sometimes subtle, sometimes profound ways; people working to make our corner of the world more beautiful, who triumph in the face of adversity and even those who leave us too soon.

There’s going to be a lot of work to do over the next several months. The eyes of the nation will be on Georgia as the Peach State determines the balance of power in the Senate. Our communities continue to struggle with the coronavirus, its economic, social and emotional toll. And, as always, it’s our job to hold power to account and be a voice for the voiceless.

In order to realize those ambitions, we need your help once again. We recently launched our second fundraising campaign with the help of the Local Media Foundation. The dollars we raise will go directly to our newsroom, to keeping journalists in the field telling vital stories. Want to help? It’s quick and easy at givebutter.com/TheMaconTelegraph.

If you prefer to send a check, you can do that too. Please make it out to the Local Media Foundation and in the notes field on the check, write “The Macon Telegraph.”

The check should be mailed to Local Media Foundation, PO Box 85015, Chicago, IL 60689-5015. If you have any problems or questions, contact Adam Waxman at awaxman@mcclatchy.com.

To our subscribers, thank you for your support. To those who gave earlier this year, we couldn’t have done what we did without you. And to those who will give in this campaign, thank you for your commitment to rigorous, fact-based journalism in Middle Georgia. I promise to reward your faith in the Telegraph.

We are continuing to explore additional ways to bolster our newsroom, creating a new model for funding journalism. We are by no means depending only on you. But we are grateful for your readership and support.
