Middle Georgia districts close schools ahead of coming winter storm

School districts in the Middle Georgia area have already announced that schools will be closed Monday, as the area preps for a winter storm.

The Jones County School District announced Friday morning a closure for all schools on Monday, according to a post on its Facebook page. Athletic and extracurricular activities for Monday have also been canceled.

“In collaboration with our local emergency management agency and surrounding districts, our district is making an early decision to close schools Monday, Jan. 26,” the district said.

Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency effective Thursday following a winter storm watch for north Georgia, and school districts across the state are preparing for forecasted icy conditions in the coming days.

Jones County schools said that while the storm’s path remains uncertain, it believes “potentially hazardous conditions” on Monday warrant the closure.

An ice storm warning is in effect for parts of northeast Georgia from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City.

The latest forecast shows a 17% chance of at least a quarter-inch of freezing rain or ice in Macon, though those chances could increase, The Telegraph previously reported.

The Bibb County School District announced Thursday afternoon it is continuing to monitor the potential for winter storm conditions this weekend. While uncertainty remains, students and staff were advised to take their devices and chargers home Friday to prepare for the possibility of asynchronous days next week.

“No decisions about school will be made until Sunday, Jan. 25,” the district said on its Facebook page. “Staff and parents should expect an update from the district Sunday evening.”

Here is the list of all closures or remote learning:
