Here’s how much ice & snow Macon may get from winter storm, latest forecast shows

A winter storm watch is in effect for north Georgia this weekend, lasting from 1 a.m. on Saturday to 10 a.m. on Monday. The latest National Weather Service (NWS) models show the storm impacting Dalton, Gainesville and Athens, but what about Macon and other Middle Georgia areas? Here’s what to know:

How much snow, ice or freezing rain will impact Macon?

Currently, Macon is expecting rain showers with lows in the 30s and highs around 50 on Saturday and Sunday. However, earlier forecasts predicted winter weather filled with possible snow and heavy ice accumulations. So, what about now?

NWS shows a 17% chance of seeing a quarter inch of freezing rain or ice, but chances could rise.

“We are still several days out from this event so shifts in the weather model guidance is to be expected. Generally, longer-range models handle the cold air wedge poorly thus uncertainties in the southward extent of wintry precipitation remains,” according to a recent post on the National Weather Service Facebook page. “Don’t let your guard down. Keep making your preparations, especially those currently in the watch area.”

North Georgia is expected to get ice accumulations of up to 0.75 inches and snow around 1-2 inches, but if the storm travels further south, Macon residents could see more ice.

What do other weather experts say?

AccuWeather meteorologists are still predicting localized freezing rain impacts in Macon and temperatures at or below freezing for much of the weekend. AccuWeather experts urge residents to prepare for power outages and dangerous roads ahead of the storm.

“Such a storm as this in the Southern states, where equipment and materials are scarce, can shut down travel for an extended period,” said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. “One-quarter of an inch of freezing rain is all it takes for power outages to begin, based on the weight on tree limbs and power lines.”

So, how can you prepare now? Here’s what to know:

How to prepare for a winter storm

American Red Cross experts said to plan to stay warm and gather emergency supplies before a winter storm. “Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking, and weather stripping,” as stated on the website.

Other tips:

  • Gather food, water, and medicine before a winter storm. Stores might be closed, and it may be unsafe to travel
  • Ensure you have enough warm clothing, such as hats, mittens, and blankets, for everyone in your household
  • Have a 1-month supply of needed medications and medical supplies. Consider keeping a list of your medications and dosages on a small card to carry with you

The National Weather Service said during a winter storm, stay inside and stay warm. If your heat goes out, here’s what to do:

  • Close off unneeded rooms to avoid wasting heat.
  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  • Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat.
  • Eat and drink. Food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat. Drinks lots of water and other non-caffeinated, non-alcholohic drinks to prevent dehydration. Cold air is very dry.
  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Remove layers to avoid overheating, perspiration and subsequent chill.
