A man who attacked other incarcerated men while housed in the Bibb County Jail will serve two decades in prison after he “used his time in jail awaiting trial to terrorize fellow inmates with brutal attacks,” according to the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office on Thursday.

Dequavia Pollard pleaded guilty to violating the conditions of his probation on Tuesday as a result of assaulting other people at the jail. He was given a 20-year sentence and his probation was revoked. He was on probation under the First Offender Act for assault and robbery charges tied to a 2019 court case.

Despite the sentence, Pollard will receive credit for the time he already served, the news release from the district attorney’s office said.

Murder charges landed him in jail

Though he was on probation, Pollard was incarcerated in the Bibb County Jail on murder charges that stemmed from Calvin Hughley Jr.’s death on Aug. 19, 2023, and Clifford Browner’s death on Jan. 14, 2024, according to court records. Those cases are still pending, and Pollard hasn’t been convicted of those offenses yet.

While in jail, he assaulted other people on two different occasions. Pollard was seen on Bibb County Jail surveillance video on Oct. 5, 2024, assaulting two incarcerated men in the facility, who sustained puncture wounds after Pollard used a shank on them, a “jail-made improvised stabbing instrument,” according to the news release from the district attorney’s office.

This attack led to Pollard being indicted on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possessing a prohibited item while incarcerated, court records show.

Pollard had also stabbed another inmate in the chest and arm on April 2, 2025, according to the news release. A corporal was told of the incident and, when reviewing surveillance footage, he “observed Pollard lunging toward the other inmate,” the news release said. Jailers found contraband items in the area where the attack occurred.

“When someone uses that second chance to commit more crime, as this defendant did repeatedly while in custody, they must face the full consequences under the law,” District Attorney Anita Howard said. “This 20-year sentence holds him accountable for his actions and protects our community from further harm.”

Pollard also failed to report to his probation officer after his release on Nov. 14, 2023 in an older case. He provided officials with an address he did not live at, and his whereabouts were unknown until his arrest on Jan. 19, 2024. He also didn’t complete his rehabilitation conditions, court records say.
