Man released from jail was rearrested after shooting victim dies, deputies say

A man accused of killing a 24-year-old in Macon was released from jail, then rearrested Monday, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Winston Burney, 24 and from Gray, initially faced aggravated assault charges connected to a shooting that injured Contrel Dixon on July 4, at a home in east Macon. Burney was booked in the Bibb County Jail days later.

He was released on bond set at $25,000 before Dixon died in hospice on Oct. 23, court records said.

Since Dixon died, Burney’s charges were upped to felony murder.

Investigators then took out warrants for his rearrest , deputies said.

The U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Burney before 11 a.m. Monday, and he was booked in the Bibb County Jail, again.

Now, he’s being held without bond.
