Two people, including at least one teenager, faced aggravated assault charges Thursday in connection with a shooting that left a man in critical condition days prior, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooting was allegedly related to gang violence, according to a news release from deputies.

A 24-year-old man was shot around 11:30 p.m. July 4, in the 1100 block of Sparkle Avenue in east Macon, according to a July 5 news release. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Charges filed

Three people, including two allegedly connected to the shooting, were arrested together during a traffic stop Thursday, the sheriff’s office said.

A vehicle was pulled over around 10 a.m. at Fairfax Drive and Bloomfield Road.

Dontavis Anquan Jackson, an 18-year-old Macon man, was identified as the suspect who allegedly shot the 24-year-old man, deputies said.

Jackson and another passenger, 17-year-old Terrace Quantae Austin of Macon, “fled on foot, but were apprehended after a brief foot chase,” deputies said. Austin was not connected to the shooting.

A third passenger, Michael Winston Burney of Gray, did not flee from deputies and was arrested without incident at the scene. Burney was identified as a person of interest allegedly related to the shooting.

Deputies recovered multiple guns from the vehicle, including two that were allegedly stolen, a news release said.

The three men were taken to the BCSO’s Investigations Headquarters, then to the Bibb County Jail.

Burney and Jackson were each charged with five counts of aggravated assault connected to the shooting. They were being held without bond.

Jackson was wanted by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office for armed robbery, and wanted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office for another charge.

Austin faced charges unrelated to the shooting. He was being held without bond.

Austin was charged with felony theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of marijuana, which is a misdemeanor.
