A man with alleged gang ties was indicted Tuesday in what police described as the execution-style shooting death of a University of Wisconsin football player’s father here earlier this year.

Calvin Stapleton faces malice and felony murder charges along with aggravated assault and other charges that allege he was involved in street gang activity and an associate of the Folk Nation.

Andre Jamar Taylor, 39, died after he was shot in the head with a handgun outside a food mart on Montpelier Avenue in Macon’s Unionville neighborhood on April 3.

Stapleton, 40, was jailed the next day. Investigators have not said what may have prompted his alleged attack.

Taylor was the father of former Stratford Academy star athlete Quintez Cephus, who is now a wide receiver for the Wisconsin Badgers.

In another case, Kentrellis Dabreon Barnes, 18, of Macon, was indicted Tuesday on an attempted murder charge.

On April 1, 7-year-old Edgerin Wallace was shot and critically wounded while he was sitting in a car with his mother on Fulton Street in east Macon’s Fort Hill neighborhood.

Barnes, the alleged gunman, faces six counts of aggravated assault, one count of second-degree cruelty to children, aggravated battery, as well as gun-possession charges.
