Warner Robins' Callaway makes college choice

Marquez Callaway will go from the cardinal red of Warner Robins to the orange of Tennessee.

The Warner Robins multi-sport standout made the announcement at noon Thursday on his Twitter feed, with a picture of teammates forming a T in the Warner Robins gym.

He thanked his family, friends and coaches as well as teachers and administrators.

“It’s been a great experience to play for WRHS and also a better experience to be apart of the recruiting process,” he wrote. “With that being said I had (sic) decided to attend the University of Tennessee and further my football career. It was a touch (sic) decision but I think I made the right decision.

“Thank you for all the support and love.”

Within three minutes, it had been retweeted 160 times and liked 150 times. Within 10 minutes, those numbers jumped to 493 and 564.

Callaway was a first-team All-Middle Georgia selection in 2014 at defensive back and in 2015 as athlete, second-team defensive back Georgia Sports Writers Association pick in 2014 and honorable mention athlete in 2016.

He is ranked as the No. 3 athlete nationally by 247Sports.com.

Callaway has played wide receiver and defensive back. The standout point guard on the Demons’ basketball team has expressed a preference for offense.

On the run-oriented Warner Robins offense, Callaway caught 34 passes for 526 yards and five touchdowns in 2015, also rushing 14 times for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Callaway was scheduled to visit Mississippi this weekend and Mississippi State next weekend, but outgoing Warner Robins head coach Bryan Way said those schools had been contacted before the announcement to cancel the visits.

He took his official visit to Tennessee last weekend, and had taken unofficial visits to Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi State and Notre Dame, according to 247Sports.com.

The Vols have nearly 20 players from Georgia, 13 wide receivers and 15 defensive backs on the spring roster.

Callaway got a home visit this week from receivers coach and passing game coordinator Zach Azzanni.

National Signing Day is Feb. 3.
