This player’s 40 points powers Northeast basketball to the tournament’s next round

High school basketball region tournaments are underway. Games started Monday and will continue through Saturday. Here is a look at the scores and highlights from Tuesday, the schedule for Wednesday night’s games and a look ahead to a pair of key matchups later this week.

Rutland 71, Jackson 65

Jamarco Hughes, a senior guard, put the Rutland Hurricanes into the next round of the tournament with 25 points including a key layup late in the game to help seal the victory over a Jackson squad that would not go away down the stretch cutting a once large Rutland lead to less than five with under two minutes to play. Rutland will now take on the No. 1 seed Westside. The Hurricanes lost both regular-season meetings but have played Westside tough on both occasions.

Northeast 89, Dodge County 88

It took a 40-point performance from Jakia Little to help the Northeast Raiders move past Dodge County in overtime. Next up is Washington County, a team the Raiders have lost to twice this season. Both games were tightly contested and came down to the final quarter before Washington County pulled away. Little, a sophomore guard, is averaging over 21 points per game, will need to once again carry the load for Northeast to have a chance.
