Howard hangs on in region tournament opener, other scores and schedule for Tuesday
The region tournaments are officially under way in high school basketball. The action started Monday with a full slate of games and will continue all the way through Saturday. Here is a look at the scores and highlights from Monday’s action, a schedule for Tuesday night’s games and a look ahead to a pair of key matchups later in the week.
Howard 70, Mary Persons 68
After playing Saturday to end the regular season, these two teams met again and it was once again Howard clinging to a small victory over the Bulldogs. Next up for the Huskies is West Laurens at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. West Laurens swept the regular-season series with the latest win coming at Howard on Jan. 28 in blowout fashion. The key to stopping the Huskies is figuring out a way to stop Collin Tarver, the senior guard who is averaging over 20 points per game.
Rutland 49, Westside-Macon 36
Monique Christian and Taylor Simmons combined for 30 points in a win over Westside on Monday night. The Hurricanes will have to shift gears now as they will take on Kendrick at 4 p.m. Thursday. The two teams split their season series with Rutland getting a 67-39 win at home but losing on the road 58-53. The game will be played at Rutland, which could provide an advantage for the Hurricanes — they have lost just one game at home all season but are .500 on the road.
