Another Mercer football player enters transfer portal, but leaves door open for return

Another Mercer football player has entered the transfer portal on the heels of the new head coach announcement last week.

Tyray Devezin, the team’s starting running back, announced his intention to enter the portal on Twitter but left the door open for a return to Mercer.

Devezin has topped 1,000 yards from scrimmage in back-to-back seasons for the Bears. He has rushed for 19 touchdowns in the past two seasons.

Losing Devezin could be a major blow with Mercer set to move into a more run-heavy approach with Drew Cronic now at the helm.

At Lenoir-Rhyne, Cronic’s offense ran for over 3,700 yards on over 700 attempts.

Devezin is the second player to announce a potential move. Wide receiver Steven Peterson made a similar announcement on Twitter on Dec. 10.

Mercer fired head coach Bobby Lamb on Nov. 24. Lamb went 41-39 during his seven years as the head coach of the Bears. Lamb was the first coach since the program restarted in 2013.

The Bears will officially introduce Cronic as the head coach in a public ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday in Heritage Hall.
