Mims to return to UGA. Former Westside star enters portal, Howard star lands at Mercer
Former Bleckley County star Amarius Mims time in the transfer portal was short-lived as he plans to return to the University of Georgia, according to 247 Sports.
The 6-foot-7, 330-pounder announced he was entering the transfer portal on April 10. Mims met with Florida State but ultimately decided to return to the Bulldogs.
When Mims committed to Georgia, Bleckley County head coach Von Lassiter said Mims was a special talent.
“He’s learning more every day. He’s a kid that’s going to understand he has job to do every snap. He’s going to fulfill that job,” Lassiter said. “He’s a lifetime learner. I think he’s gonna continue to try to get better every day. And I’m ready to see him fit up against some other five stars.”
Other transfer news
On the basketball court, Mercer women’s basketball added a key transfer from Oklahoma State. Brittany Reeves, a former Howard High star, is returning home to play for the Bears next season.
She spent one year in Stillwater, where she played in 16 games and notched a double-double against Oral Roberts.
Reeves spent her first two seasons at Independence Community College in Kansas. She was a second-team NJCAA All-American during her time with the Pirates before transferring to Oklahoma State last season.
“We are thrilled to welcome Brittany back to Macon, Georgia, where she grew up and had an outstanding high school career at Howard High School playing for Coach LaTavia Coleman,” Mercer head coach Susie Gardner said in a release. “Brittany brings size and athleticism to our team which is needed as three post players graduated this year.”
Former Westside standout, Jehlen “Hollywood” Cannady announced he was entering the transfer portal after a strong performance during G-Day last week. Cannady was a walk-on at UGA and won a national title in his lone season with the Bulldogs.
The former Seminole will have four years of eligibility left after playing in just two games last season for Georgia.
Coming out of high school, Cannady turned down seven scholarship offers including Colorado State, Air Force and Mercer, in order to walk on at UGA.
