The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Transportation were still warning Middle Georgians to limit travel on roads due to icy conditions Thursday.

While much of the snow that fell Tuesday into Wednesday has melted, low temperatures overnight caused some roadways to freeze again Thursday morning, according to a news release. GDOT and the sheriff’s office said overpasses and bridges could be especially dangerous due to black ice, which is a clear layer of ice that develops on roadways and is especially hard to see while driving.

The release said the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and GDOT would provide updates on road conditions later Thursday, though more information hadn’t been provided yet Thursday evening.

The National Weather Service put out a warning early Thursday morning, saying that much of North and Middle Georgia will still see bitter cold and icy conditions throughout the day. The NWS said in the warning that hazardous conditions weren’t predicted on Friday.

The sheriff’s office and GDOT announcement comes as businesses, non-essential government services and school districts across Middle Georgia remain closed due to ice and snow.
