With unusually heavy highway traffic, overcrowded hotels and families in shelters still recovering from Hurricane Helene, Florida evacuees fleeing Hurricane Milton may have difficulty finding shelter elsewhere in Georgia.

Georgia State Parks have campgrounds open for RVs and campers ahead of the storm, which is expected to make landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday.

As of Wednesday morning, cottages are available south of Atlanta in Indian Springs, Chattahoochee Bend, Crooked River, FD Roosevelt, Florence Marina, Fort McAllister, Seminole and Little Ocmulgee.

Many cottages remained available Wednesday in north Georgia, according to a Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites Facebook post.

People should call designated parks to make same-day cottage reservations.

More evacuation shelters across Georgia have been opened by the American Red Cross, local governments, nonprofit organizations and private companies.

U-Haul companies in Georgia and South Carolina are extending their 30 days of free self-storage disaster relief for Milton evacuees and local residents preparing for potential flooding and storm surge.

“There are 78 U-Haul self-storage locations in Georgia and 30 in South Carolina available to provide one month of free traditional self-storage or on-site U-Box portable storage to anyone in need,” U-Haul International Media & Public Relations Specialist Sydney Ellis said in an email.

The extended offer will remain available in the coming weeks for those needing help during the recovery process from Milton or Helene, Ellis added.

During the time of aid, community centers and churches throughout Middle Georgia are also demonstrating southern hospitality by offering free services and fellowship opportunities for evacuees.

Forsyth Methodist Church in Monroe County is hosting a free dinner Wednesday night for Hurricane Milton evacuees, featuring spaghetti, dessert and board games.

The event, which is open to all ages, will allow families to get out of their hotels and campers and enjoy themselves, according to the church’s Facebook post. No registration is required.
