A lottery player checked his ticket — and got a huge surprise.

“I was scratching it, and it keeps getting better and better,” the man told the South Carolina Education Lottery.

The lucky player scored a $100,000 prize, which was a “long time coming,” lottery officials wrote May 8 in a news release.

“I’ve been playing for 25 years and never really won much,” the winner said.

This time around, he tried his luck at the Power Trac store in Piedmont, a roughly 10-mile drive south from downtown Greenville. While there, he spent $3 on a ticket for the Lady Jumbo Bucks Crossword scratch-off game.

It turns out, the man’s crossword-themed ticket had 11 words on it. That means he beat 1-in-600,000 odds to score the game’s top prize.

“It was pretty fun,” said the winner, who wasn’t identified in the news release.

It’s not the first time a longtime lottery player has finally hit the jackpot. In Maryland, a woman hugged her dad when she won more more money than she ever had before, McClatchy News reported.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
