Monroe County student tests positive for COVID-19, prompting quarantine for some

A student at K.B. Sutton Elementary school has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and was being isolated at home, the Monroe County School District announced Tuesday.

Other students and school staff determined to have been in close contact with the student while at school or on the school bus have been notified by district officials. As a precaution, parents are being asked to quarantine those students at home.

”Our school staff has planned for and prepared for just this situation,” Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mike Hickman said in the release. “Use of safety protocols in the school, as well as social distancing and use of masks, have helped to keep exposures to a minimum.”

The number of students and staff impacted was not included in the release.

The Telegraph is tracking reports of positive COVID-19 test results in Middle Georgia schools, colleges and universities. Here is a list of other reported cases:

Houston County schools

The Houston County School District announced Aug. 12 that people at seven schools tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, according to a Telegraph article. The release followed a similar announcement on Aug. 10 that said three schools had people who tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Classes started on Aug. 6 for Houston County, and the school district notified parents and students who had potentially been exposed to the virus on Aug. 8.

The school district did not release how many people tested positive or whether or not they were students or teachers.

Here is the list of schools impacted from both announcements:

  • Houston County High

  • Lake Joy Primary

  • Lindsey Elementary

  • Mossy Creek Middle

  • Perry Middle*

  • Perry High*

  • Shirley Hills Elementary*

  • Thomson Middle

  • Quail Run Elementary

*Perry Middle was mentioned in both releases, but Perry High and Shirley Hills were only mentioned in the first announcement.

Crawford County Schools

Crawford County Schools announced Aug. 17 a confirmed COVID-19 case of one of their football coaches and teachers, according to a news release.

The school district alerted two staff members that had been in contact with the positive case, and they were told to quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure. The district also sanitized the contaminated area.

Mercer University

Mercer University announced 103 students tested positive for COVID-19 between July 20-Aug. 19 in an Aug. 21 news release.

The university required all residential undergraduate students in Macon, some 3,400 students, to receive a test before they began classes, as well as hundreds more who completed screening surveys that indicated they were potentially infected. In total, 4,229 students from all Mercer campuses were tested.

Out of the 263 faculty and staff members who were tested for the coronavirus, 15 returned positive test results. None of the students or employees who tested positive have been hospitalized, as far as Mercer is aware.
