Trial tentatively scheduled in 2014 Macon triple killing
At least one of the men charged in a May 2014 triple slaying probably will go to trial late this spring.
An attorney for Rayshawn Reanaldo "Ping" Lucas filed a speedy-trial demand in the case Monday, which requires Lucas' trial to begin by June 5 -- or he'll be acquitted.
"He's been in custody since May 2014," said Laura D. Hogue, Lucas' lawyer. "That's a really long time to wait for your day in court."
Lucas, Lewis Monroe "Bear" Cheney II, 31; Quintavious "Quinn" Isaih Everett, 24; and Vincent "White Boy" Lewis, 37; are charged with murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, violating the state's Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and illegally having a cell phone while incarcerated.
They are accused of ambushing Arika "Lottie Dottie" Jarrell and Ralph Heard on May 29, 2014, and trying to rob the pair near Jarrell's Fairburn Avenue home.
A shootout ensued, and Jarrell, 23, and Heard, 32, were killed.
Another member of the alleged ambushing group, Terrance "Heavy D" Dent, 25, was fatally shot during the robbery attempt.
Prosecutor John Regan said the district attorney's office had previously said it planned to take the case to trial in 2016.
"We're preparing for trial," he said Wednesday.
The case is tentatively set to be tried in late May or early June, although it's unclear how many of the men will go to trial together.
Cheney's lawyer has filed a motion for his client to be tried separately.
