18-year-old charged with vehicular manslaughter in fatal Macon crash

An 18-year-old was charged with vehicular homicide in a fatal car crash on Bethel Church Road in Macon last month, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said.

Amari Cheely turned himself in just before 6 a.m. Monday. He was charged with vehicular homicide, causing serious injury by vehicle and disregard for a stop sign, BCSO said in a news release.

The crash happened at the intersection of Knoxville Road and Bethel Church Road around 10 p.m. June 5. An Audi SUV was driving eastbound on Bethel Church Road when it crossed the intersection and collided with a Nissan Altima, the news release said.

Tony Gales’ , the passenger of the Nissan, was taken to the hospital, where he was later declared dead by medical staff.

No one else was injured.

Deputies urged anyone with information to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 and ask to speak with a fatality investigator.
