Man assaulted near bar where guests honored Macon drowning victim, witness says
After friends and family celebrated the life of a recent drowning victim at a downtown Macon bar, a man was struck in the head with a weapon outside of the party early Friday morning, according to a witness.
The incident involved a gun but no one was shot. It happened outside of The Daisy Tequila & Margarita Bar at 518 Cherry Street, where the drowning victim used to DJ at, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
A man was reportedly intoxicated and disturbed party-goers, which prompted a security guard to kick him out of the bar, according to Shannon “Shagg Colie” Howard, 41, who produced music for eight years with Johnny “Yung” Collins III, the 28-year-old man who drowned at Amerson River Park Tuesday night.
“We were trying to enjoy ourselves, represent our brother,” Howard, who was at the party since around 9 p.m. Thursday, said.
After the suspect was kicked out, he allegedly walked to a vehicle, fired a “warning shot in the air,” then attempted to reenter the bar, Howard said.
The suspect then allegedly got into an altercation with a 49-year-old man who was celebrating Collins’ life at Daisy.
The alleged shooter then struck the 49-year-old in the head with the gun, Howard said. The sheriff’s office called the weapon “an unknown object,” in a news release.
Deputies responded to the area just before 3 a.m. after a report of shots fired, according to a news release.
They arrived and found the 49-year-old man “suffering from a head injury where it appeared that he was hit with an unknown object,” deputies said. His injuries were non-life-threatening.
Paramedics arrived and took the man on an ambulance to a medical facility for treatment. His head injury was treated and he was released later Friday morning, the sheriff’s office said.
The suspect fled before deputies arrived, according to Howard. The suspect was still not arrested by 3 p.m. Friday, Dep. Alexis Mitchell-White said.
The bar was starting to close when the incident happened.
“The vibes were good, no problems, no issues all night” until the altercation, Howard said.
The sheriff’s office said it couldn’t comment on Howard’s recounting of the incident due to the ongoing investigation into the assault.
Investigators encouraged anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff’s office at 478-751-7500, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
