Security camera recorded video of shooting in Macon’s latest homicide, report says
A home-security camera captured footage of a shooting in an armed confrontation that left a 56-year-old Macon man dead Saturday evening in the city’s Unionville area.
The video may help investigators piece together details of what happened and who was responsible in an apparent exchange of gunfire that also saw a second man seriously wounded by a bullet that tore through his thigh.
Details of the Oct. 8 episode were noted in a Bibb County sheriff’s report based on accounts of witnesses and those believed to be involved in the 6:48 p.m. clash.
The shooting claimed the life of Tommy Williams, who was shot in his chest and in a leg. According to the report, he lived near the scene of the shooting at 1435 Bailey Ave., which runs between Napier Avenue and Columbus Road, seven blocks west of Pio Nono Avenue.
A woman at the house, the report said, told sheriff’s deputies that “an argument broke out and that shots were fired,” also wounding a 24-year-old man named Brandon Neal.
Neal, shot in the thigh, was also shot in his upper chest.
The deputies later examined footage from a home-security camera, which was said to have shown “a large group of people outside.” Williams was standing on the left side of a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban. Neal and his fiancee were reportedly on the other side.
“There appeared to be some sort of argument occurring,” the sheriff’s report said. “The video showed the victim (Williams) with a gun in his hand and then it showed Neal firing his gun. (Neal’s fiancee) pulled her weapon out as well. After the shots were fired James and Neal left the scene. It appears that the victim (Williams) had shot Neal as well.”
The report said “several” bullet shell casings littered the scene.
Another sheriff’s deputy’s written account of the incident included an encounter the deputy had with Neal, who was by then at his house on Napier, less than a mile away.
The deputy noted that Neal said he often visited the house where the shooting happened, which is where his child’s great-grandmother lives. Neal told the deputy that a man who was at the house Saturday night, a man believed to be Williams, “is always bullying him while he is there,” the report said.
Neal told the deputy that “they got into an argument tonight” and that Williams was “following him around (and) pointing a pistol at him.”
According to the report, Neal said that while they were outside, Neal grabbed a pistol. He said Williams “fired at him and then he shot back.”
Neal, who was later taken to a hospital, said he was not sure where he “tossed the weapon he had,” the report said.
As of midday Wednesday, no arrests had been made.
