Two Macon men shot, one fatally wounded, amid weekend gunfire in Unionville area
A 56-year-old Macon man was shot and killed and a second man was wounded Saturday evening amid gunfire that may have stemmed from what Bibb County sheriff’s officials described as a “domestic situation.”
The slain man was identified as Tommy Williams and the wounded man was Brandon Neal, 24, who was said to have been in “stable” condition late Saturday at a local hospital.
It was unclear what prompted the 6:48 p.m. shooting in the 1400 block of Bailey Avenue. The street stretches north and south between Napier Avenue and Columbus Road on the north side of the Unionville neighborhood.
Williams’ death was the county’s 55th homicide of 2022.
This year’s homicide total for Bibb, according to Telegraph research, is a new modern-day high for violent deaths in the county, eclipsing last year’s total of 54.
Since the beginning of 2020, homicides have seen a marked increase — 51 in 2020; 54 in 2021; and 55 in 2022 — accounting for 160 deaths.
Combined, in the six years before that — all of 2014 through the end of 2019 — 161 people in Macon were homicide victims.
