Macon cops search for clues after gunshot victim arrives at hospital mortally wounded

A gunshot-wound victim who was driven to a Macon hospital on Thursday night later died, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said.

The officials said in a statement that investigators were alerted at 7:17 p.m. after the victim, a 28-year-old man, arrived at the hospital.

Details of what prompted the shooting or where it happened were not immediately known, the statement added.

At midday Friday, Coroner Leon Jones publicly identified the dead man as Elijah “Eli” Jameel Rasheed of Lake Elsinore, California, southeast of Los Angeles.

However, according to public records, as recently as last May he was living in a Macon apartment complex at the intersection of Napier Avenue and Park Street at the Ayers Road intersection.

Investigators later determined the shooting took place in a Family Dollar parking lot at 3600 Napier Avenue. Bibb County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Brian Marquel Greene, 25, on April 4 and charged him with murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Greene had an outstanding warrant for simple battery in other case. He also has a probation violation on a felony charge and a hold from the Atrium Health Navicent Police Department. He was being held in the Bibb County jail without bond on April 5.

Rasheed’s death was the county’s 15th homicide of 2022 — 13 of which have been the result of gunshot wounds.

Six of the 15 slayings happened in January, five were in February and Thursday night’s was the fourth in March.

There were 54 homicides countywide last year.
