Escaped Macon jail inmate now in critical condition at a local hospital
A man who escaped police custody Friday is back in a local hospital in critical condition, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
Ha’Keem Romaire Barrett, 20, had been jailed on armed robbery and aggravated assault charges when he was taken to Atrium Health Navicent for “a medical issue,” according to a sheriff’s office press release. While using a restroom, he climbed through the ceiling and escaped to a nearby hallway, then fled the hospital.
His escape initiated a manhunt through downtown Macon, prompting concerns from residents about what was going on. The sheriff’s office released Barrett’s name, description and photos, but he remained on the lam Saturday.
Early Sunday morning, Macon-Bibb County’s 911 center received a call from one of Barrett’s relatives. Investigators determined Barrett showed up at his sister’s house on Bloomfield Road having apparently found a new set of clothes and in poor health. He quickly became unresponsive and his family member called 911.
Barrett was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and Bibb County Sheriff’s deputies and is currently in critical condition.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
