Popular Indian restaurant in Warner Robins has inviting new look. See inside
On a rainy, slow day at their Indian restaurant in Warner Robins, Ishtpreet “Jay” Bhullar took a good look at the interior and decided it was time for change.
He wanted a fresh look for 7 Spices Authentic Indian Restaurant & Bar.
“If people are dining in, they get a good experience, and they get a bang for their buck as well,” Bhullar said after the recent remodel.
His wife, Kirti Bhullar, chose all the colors and designs for the remodel.
Take a look inside
To achieve the new look, the former yellowish color walls were repainted with terracotta to give the restaurant a more earthy Indian look.
Bhullar also chose a neutral wooden look for the new booths and an Indian marble for the tables. She added new shades for the hanging lamps and even did some of the decorating by hand.
“It’s usually on homes in villages,” Bhullar said as she pointed to white pattern designs painted on the walls. “Families get together and they make patterns around their doors, their windows.”
A Kollam, an intricate geometric pattern and form of Indian art, was added to the corner of the secondary exit door.
Photos of folk art from different regions of India are displayed on a back wall on the opposite side of the restaurant.
Bhullar and her three daughters, Nanki, 13, Bani, 9, and Raavi, 7, transformed the Ganesha statue that was previously a solid brass color into a vibrant figure welcoming guests into the restaurant. Ganesha is a Hindu diety.
Adding to the presentation is Indian music playing in the background.
The aim is to represent Indian culture and food in an inviting, cozy and comfortable atmosphere.
“So when you come in, you enjoy it,” Bhular said.
From running liquor stores to serving Indian cuisine
In 2022, the Bhullars purchased what was then Curry Mantra at 4025 Watson Blvd., Suite 290, and spent six months in training under the former owner.
“We had zero knowledge of this,” Kirti Bhullar said. “We owned liquor stores prior to opening up a restaurant.”
Jay Bhullar interjected with a laugh, “And then we jump in.”
Kirti Bhullar continued, “So we needed that six months of learning the ins and outs of this place.”
Before becoming owners, the Bhullars had been customers — finding the food and flavors authentic. They recalled celebrating their youngest daughter’s first birthday at the restaurant that catered the event.
Jay Bhullar was actually looking at another restaurant in Savannah to purchase before 7 Spices. When he asked the then-Curry Mantra owner if the selling price was fair for the Savannah restaurant, Bhullar learned the Indian restaurant was for sale.
In early 2023, the Bhullars renamed the restaurant 7 Spices Authentic Indian Restaurant & Bar and introduced themselves to the community as the new owners on Facebook.
Over time, they tasted every single food item, made changes and streamlined the menu. They also updated and replaced some of the kitchen equipment.
A taste of Northern India
The restaurant specializes in a wide variety of dishes from Northern India, with only a handful of dishes from Southern India. The restaurant also offers a few Indo-Chinese entrees.
“Our biggest thing is we cater to spice levels,” Kirti Bhullar said. “So anywhere between mild to Indian hot, you can get the dishes catered to your taste buds.”
For starters, diners can choose from a host of appetizers and soups. Samosas are made with veggies, chicken or lamb. Pakora, which are deep fried fritters, are made with paneer, mirch (chilli) or mixed veggies.
The restaurant has a tandoor, or clay oven, on site with several tandoori entries and a variety of naan offerings, with garlic naan the most popular.
A full page of the seven-page menu is devoted to curry dishes, including eight in which guests may choose their choice of protein from paneer, chicken, fish, shrimp, lamb, salmon and crab kafta.
There’s also four more only chicken curry dishes, as well as four dal (lentil and bean) curry entrees and 10 vegetarian curry dishes.
The restaurant also offers biryani, described on the menu as a flavorful dish layered with rice, Indian spices, fresh herbs and a choice of protein that’s cooked for hours to marinate the flavors over a low flame in a clay pot that’s sealed with dough. Protein choices include vegetables, chicken, shrimp, lamb and goat.
Additionally, seven lamb and goat entrees round out the menu, which also includes a section for kids.
The restaurant also offers an assortment of Indian chaa, coffee, lassi, soda, beer and desserts. Coca-Cola products, sweet and unsweet tea, other bottled and draft beer, mimosas and more are available.
Not sure what to try? A few suggestions
The Bhullars were asked to recommend a few dishes to try. Here are the dishes:
Chili Mango Shrimp - Sweet and spicy jumbo shrimp with mango ginger glaze served as an appetizer.
Chicken Lollipop - A popular Indian fried chicken appetizer in which the meat is cut loose from the bone and pushed down to create a lollipop appearance. It’s not on the menu but currently running as a special.
Veggie Samosa - Deep fried with spices with a crispy outside to the dough formed in a triangular shape.
Makhani Curry with chicken - The Bhullars recommend this as a go-to dish for people new to Indian food. Also known as butter chicken, the curry is made with tomatoes, butter and onions.
Tandoori lamb chops - Cooked in a tandoor for a slightly smoky taste described on the menu as spicy and flavorful.
Mango Lassi - A creamy yogurt-based drink that’s blended with various fruits and seasonings with this recommendation made with freshly pureed mangos and other seasonings.
“We cook from the heart,” Bhullar said. “Everything is made fresh.”
A sister restaurant is now open
A sister restaurant to 7 Spices is Slice & Spice, a new restaurant in the same shopping center that Kirti Bhullar developed from scratch that specializes in Italian-Indian fusion pizza.
In an earlier Telegraph interview about Slice & Spice opening, Bhullar noted, “If you can order it in an Indian restaurant, it can be put on a pizza.”
Additionally, Bhullar is balancing running her restaurant and her nursing career as a traveling emergency room/trauma case manager while pursuing her master’s degree in nursing informatics.
7 Spices can seat up to 110 people and is large enough to section off and accommodate large groups. In addition to dine-in, takeout, online ordering and third party delivery is available.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily except when closed Tuesday.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The number is 478-333-5800.
