Food safety violations led Warner Robins restaurant to fail 2nd health inspection this year

Raw hamburger meat stored on sliced cheese and cut cabbage and carrots near the grill above temperatures required for food safety contributed to a Warner Robins restaurant failing its second routine inspection this year.

American Philly & Wings at 819 Russell Parkway received a “U” for “unsatisfactory compliance” with a score of 60 at its routine inspection Thursday, according to what was reported Monday in the state health department’s online portal.

A follow-up inspection is required after a failing grade of 69 or less and generally takes place within 10 days of the routine inspection. No follow-up inspection report was included Monday in the online portal.

On June 5, American Philly & Wings received a “U” with a score of 59 at its routine inspection. But after that failure, the restaurant bounced back with a 91 for an “A” for “food safety excellence” at its June 19 follow-up inspection.

Failing grade

At its Oct. 31 routine inspection, an environmental health inspector observed that the person in charge at American Philly & Wings — and serving as its food safety manager — was not performing their duties as it relates to food safety, the inspection report said.

The restaurant was storing raw shrimp over ready to eat sauces and raw hamburger directly on sliced cheese inside the walk-in cooler, according to the report.

To protect from potential cross contamination, state law requires that raw animal foods be separated from ready to eat foods during storage, preparation, holding and display, according to the report.

A bulk container of cooked rice with a prep date of Oct. 21 was inside the reach-in cooler, which was beyond the maximum seven days required by state law for food safety, according to the report.

Two containers of cut cabbage and carrots near the grill area registered at 72 degrees, 31 degrees over the necessary temperature of 41 degrees or below for food safety, according to the report.

An employee was observed washing and rinsing food containers without sanitizing them, the report said.

The restaurant was also cited for not having hot water at the hand-washing sink near the fryers.

At prior routine health inspections, American Philly & Wings scored an 87 for a “B” on Feb. 2; a 97 for an “A” on Aug. 29, 2023; a 92 for an “A” on April 10, 2022; and a 97 for an “A” on Nov. 7, 2022, according to what was reported in the online portal.

Other scores

Meanwhile, most Houston County restaurants, coffee shops, bars and food trucks earned “A’s” on their routine inspections — including more than 30 that earned perfect scores of 100.

Eight restaurants and one food truck earned “B’s” while none received a “C” during the reporting period of Oct. 1-31.

How it works

An “A” is given for a score between 90 and 100, denoting “food safety excellence.” A score of 80 to 89 is considered “satisfactory compliance” for a grade of “B,” while a “C” is given for “marginal compliance” based on a score of 70-79. A “U” for “unsatisfactory compliance” is given when a restaurant scores 69 or less.

Restaurant inspections are designed to protect public health. Only restaurants with the best and worst scores were included in this article.
