Is it really ‘the filet mignon of chicken’? Here’s my review of Huey Magoo’s in Macon

When a restaurant’s slogan is “the filet mignon of chicken,” you have to try it.

And while I may be late to experience the hype, I’m so glad I got around to it.

Huey Magoo’s opened last year in Macon with its first location on Bass Road and shortly after, another location on Zebulon Road. The restaurant is known for its crispy, perfectly fried tenders, made from the best 3% of the chicken, which is the tenderloin.” Hence, the “filet mignon” slogan.

So, when in the area, I knew I had to finally try the chicken for myself. What did I think? Here’s my review:

From the outside of the Zebulon location, Huey Magoo’s looked just like any other chicken joint, but did it taste like it? Here’s my review:

I ordered a five-piece tender meal, which came with five crispy chicken tenders, fries and a piece of bread. The meal also came with a dipping sauce choice, so I chose the Magoo’s dip. To drink, I ordered a handcrafted strawberry lemonade.

The meal was $10.99 and the drink was an extra $2.99. I also ordered an extra dipping sauce, honey mustard, and that was an extra $0.89. I didn’t think the total was too bad. Comparatively, Zaxby’s five-finger plate with five tenders, bread, sauce, fries and a drink is $13.99 and a four count tender meal at Chick-Fil-A comes out to around $11.

I dined in and service was pretty quick at the restaurant. About five minutes after I sat down, the food came out, so I was super impressed with that.

My chicken tender plate was enormous. When I first looked at it, I was unsure how I would even finish that much food, but I’m not going to lie, I got pretty close.

The tenders were cooked perfectly, with a crispy outside and hot, juicy inside. The batter was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and had a tiny kick of spice, which I loved. I seriously could eat these tenders every day. They were definitely some of the best tenders I’ve had at a chicken spot in Macon. And they were huge, so that’s a plus for sure.

The fries were also full of flavor — from the crunch to the hint of seasoning. And don’t get me started on the Magoo’s dipping sauce. It was creamy, dreamy and I swear, I could dip just about anything in that and love it. The honey mustard was good, too, but nothing like the Magoo’s sauce.

One thing I wasn’t too impressed with, though, was the strawberry lemonade. Apparently, it’s “handcrafted” in house every day, and don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t horrible. However, it just wasn’t anything to rave about. It tasted the same as any other I’ve had. Next time, I think I’ll get Sprite or Coke. I felt like I was missing a little zing with the drink.

Overall, after tasting everything and looking back at the price, I’m still pretty sold on it. I give the price a 4 out of 5 and the food a 5 out of 5.
