Porch season is finally here, but so are stinging, buzzing pests that make nests in the most inconvenient spots.

Wasps linger around doorways, porches and playgrounds, making it difficult to enjoy a nice, sunny day outside. However, we found some ways to send them packing for good.

Here’s what to know about wasps and how to keep them away from your home and yard.

Why do wasps nest on porches and around doors?

It’s annoying to see wasps nests around your relaxing porch and having them fly around doorways makes it hard coming and going. So, why do they like areas we want to enjoy?

“Porches are designed to provide shelter from the weather and wasps are looking for nesting sites that offer protection from wind and rain,” said Karen Brewer Grossman with Southern Living. “Corners, cracks, and spaces under the eaves make ideal spots for nesting.”

Of course, pretty flowers, residue from drinks or food you might have had outside or sources of water can also attract wasps and keep them around.

Well, what gets them gone? Let’s take a look:

How to keep wasps away from your GA home and yard

One of the best ways to deter wasps is to keep your porch and yard clean and mess-free.

“Keeping up with your regular outdoor maintenance will also help deter wasps from settling in your space. Be sure to regularly clean outdoor spaces, particularly outdoor dining spaces. Make sure you dispose of old food and waste properly,” according to Mosquito Joe experts.

Mosquito Joe experts also said to “avoid strong perfumes or floral patterns, as both of those scents can attract wasps.”

Other ways to keep wasps away: essential oils, especially peppermint, but there are other scents, too like citronella, mint, basil, marigolds or eucalyptus.

However, it is best to avoid fennel, milkweed, parsley, carrots, and goldenrod, so you don’t want those around.

Another tip from Bee Smart Pest Control: decoy nests.

“Some species of wasps are territorial and avoid areas with existing nests. By hanging fake wasp nests in strategic locations around your property, you can deter them from building their own nests nearby.”

And if all else fails, call a pest control expert for additional help.
