“Merry Christmas” is something we say to spread cheer, brighten someone’s day or greet each other during the holiday season. But what about at work?

If you say “Merry Christmas” at work and your employer doesn’t approve, could they fire you for it?

Here’s what to know:

Can you get fired for saying “Merry Christmas” at work in GA?

Short answer: maybe. According to Georgia.gov, Georgia is an at-will employment state, which means the employer or employee can terminate the working relationship at any time for any reason (except something illegal).

However, most employers should have an employee handbook of some sort to refer to when there are questions of conduct, expectations and more.

Moreover, simply saying “Merry Christmas” to others at work or customers probably won’t get you fired, but if your manager requests you use “Happy Holidays” instead and you don’t accommodate that request, that could be risky. And if there are written instructions in a handbook that state employees must use a different greeting around the holiday season, it could be a fireable offense.

But why? Well, simply put, not everyone celebrates Christmas and your employer may want to be inclusive of everyone’s religion.

“There’s also a really good chance there are people in your office who do not celebrate Christmas. They are probably fine with you celebrating, but when you have Christmas after Christmas after Christmas activity, they can start to feel left out, ignored, and excluded,” according to the Evil HR Lady blog.

So, while it is unlikely that you get fired for saying “Merry Christmas,” it could still happen under certain circumstances.
