Spooky celebration returns: Macon Witches Float is back after flooding cancellation
The Macon Witches Float is back after a hiatus last year.
The event, which started in 2021, invites people to float, row or paddle along the river in Halloween costumes and benefits Macon Periods Easier, a local initiative that seeks to alleviate “period poverty” in Macon-Bibb County, which is the issue of people lacking access to menstrual products.
The float is set to return to the Ocmulgee River after being canceled last year due to flooding and damage from Hurricane Helene.
This year’s Macon Witches Float will launch from the Jay Hall Memorial Canoe Launch in Amerson River Park on Oct. 5, at 3:30 p.m.
Guests should check-in at the tent located near the Porter Pavillion. Check-in will be open from 2 p.m. to launch time, and shuttles will be available to take paddlers and their gear to the canoe launch.
Those who don’t have a flotation device will have the option to rent a kayak, canoe, inflatable stand-up paddleboard or tandem kayaks.
Participants are encouraged to come in costume and decorate their flotation devices to get into the Halloween spirit. A guest judge will select the “Best Dressed” to win a $100 gift card presented by Visit Macon.
Those who bring a period product to donate will also be entered into a drawing for prizes including a free paddle excursion from Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions.
Tickets are available online with prices ranging from $20-$85.
