Macon-Bibb County has picked a contractor to pave nearly 9 more miles of problemed roads, approving a bid from Professional Paving Services, LLC, the county announced Tuesday.

The $1.9 million bid from Professional Paving Services was approved by the Macon-Bibb County Commission unanimously on Tuesday. It was the lowest-priced option that met all of the county’s requirements, officials said in a news release. The money will come from the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Local Road Assistance administration, which is part of the Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant program. That program does not require a local match, the county said.

This round of repaving is expected to start in a couple weeks, officials said Tuesday.

The roads were picked based on an assessment of all 1,100 miles of county-owned, paved roads to identify the areas most in need of repaving. The roads were rated 1-5 to determine the severity of their conditions, with 5 being the worst. This round of repavement is part of a process that will ensure all roads rated 3 or higher will be repaved, the county said in a news release.

There are 49 total road segments involved in this round of repaving, which is part of Macon’s broader “Paving The Way” initiative to fix more roads.

“We identified the worst roads in our community and are focusing first on them, as well as roads that are heavily traveled every day,” Mayor Lester Miller said in a news release. “There isn’t a part of our county that won’t have major improvements for daily travel.”

The county has bigger aspirations for repaving more roads too.

“Earlier this year all 1,100 miles were rescanned by StreetScan, ranking them 1-100, and giving the county a more comprehensive understanding of the need,” the county said in a news release. “From that rating, a set of criteria was applied and 459 roads totaling almost 130 miles and $44 million were identified for the next rounds.”
