Macon plans to spend $40M on improving more than 450 roads. What we know.

Bibb County is making major investments in infrastructure, with the county announcing it intends to repave 459 roads in a Tuesday news release.

The roads, which total just under 130 miles, are slated to have all or portions over their pavement re-done over the next several years. The project will cost around $40 million, and be funded through a mix of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax money, state grants and the county’s general fund, the release said.

The project is the second phase of Bibb County’s Pave the Way Program, which seeks to invest in and improve county roads, the release said.

According to county documents, the roads are located across Bibb County, and include everything from quiet, residential streets to bustling downtown thoroughfares. Among the busier roads named for the project are First, Third and Fifth streets downtown, Main Street in east Macon and Bloomfield Road in southwest Macon.

The roads were identified based on scans of all county-owned and paved roads. Segments of the roads were then rated on a scale of 1-100 based on the condition of the pavement. The county selected roads that scored poorly as well as roads with a lot of traffic through industrial areas.

Bibb County is currently asking developers to submit bids for the project. The deadlines for all three solicitations are later this month, according to county documents.
