CNN found the 10 best American cities to visit now & Macon is one of them. Here’s why
For those of us who live in Macon, we already know that it’s probably one of the coolest places around. But finally, others are catching on and Macon is getting the recognition it deserves.
Recently, travel editors at CNN found 10 great American cities to go visit now and our beloved Macon made the list at number seven.
The editors chose Macon and other U.S. cities like Knoxville, Grand Rapids, Flagstaff and Portland because “offer loads of personality and plenty to see and do without the elbow-to-elbow crowds of the big tourist cities.”
So, what about Macon caught their eye?
Macon was specifically noted for its rich music scene and lively downtown experience. Although it was deemed a “ghost town” many years ago, CNN’s story recognized Macon as a “thriving” and “popping” town today.
“Stroll through downtown Macon, and you’ll find craft brewpubs not far from a lounge that’s been keeping music lovers entertained for half a century,” said Marnie Hunter, a CNN reporter. “A beloved new bagel shop is a half-mile walk from a soul food classic that’s still serving fried chicken and collard greens 65 years after opening.”
Macon’s very own Allman Brothers Band, Little Richard and Otis Redding were just a few of the legendary hometown musicians named. And several local businesses were highlighted in the story such as The Society Garden, Grant’s Lounge, H&H, The Rookery and Ingleside Village Pizza.
Macon was also recognized for its indigenous history and push to make the Ocmulgee Mounds a National Park.
