Woman struck by car, killed while crossing well-traveled south Macon intersection

A woman walking through a well-traveled south Macon intersection was struck by a car and killed Tuesday evening, officials said.

Vickie Elaine Smith, 57, was said to have been heading east across Houston Road where it ties into Broadway, just across the highway from the southern terminus of Pio Nono Avenue.

The forked, three-way intersection is at times one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

Smith lived nearby at the Magnolia Court Motel, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.

Sheriff’s officials said in a statement that Smith was struck by a Mazda3 driven by a 60-year-old Macon woman.

The incident is the second pedestrian death at the intersection since late October.
