This historic mansion for sale has a waterfall and is 25 minutes from downtown Macon

An enormous estate featuring a waterfall, tennis court and several acres of pastureland in Bolingbroke is for sale for more than $18 million.

The property, known as the Great Hill Place, features more than 300 acres and a 13,500-square-foot mansion, according to Zillow, an online real estate marketplace.

The mansion includes Smart Home features as well as a playroom, nanny suite, second kitchen, theater, gym and rooftop balcony, which guests can visit on a hydraulic elevator.

On the estate sits a 10-acre lake with a boat ramp and pavilion, tennis and basketball courts, a five-stall horse barn and fenced pastureland. The lake features an eight-foot waterfall.

Architectural features include fluted Corinthian columns, dentil molding and a domed rotunda.

The estate has been listed on Zillow for 33 days with more than 15,000 views. The property is valued at $4.3 million on the Monroe County Tax Assessor’s website. The last time the property was sold for a dollar amount was in 1995 for $950,000.

The property was up for sale in 2019 for $15 million, but it doesn’t appear to have been sold on the tax assessor’s website.

History of the home

The property was once home to one of the few intact 19th-century plantations in existence, and it was built by a Virginia family named Mason, according to Telegraph archives.

William Wadley, president of the Central Georgia Railroad Company and former Confederate superintendent of railroads, purchased the home in 1873 with more than 1,300 acres of land. The purchase price was a whopping $6,410.

After a portion of the land was sold following Wadley’s death in 1882, the remaining home and property received the name the Great Hill Place.

The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970’s, and a group of Macon investors purchased the home in 1974 for a little more than $1.2 million.

The original mansion, which was a 22 room, two story structure, burned to the ground on Jan. 31, 1982. The current mansion was built in 2002 with seven bedrooms and 10 full bathrooms.
