A pedestrian was struck by a car late Tuesday and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The victim was identified as 62-year-old Walter Barnes Jr., a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release said.

A 1995 Buick Roadmaster ... was traveling north bound on Gray Highway when it struck Barnes, “who was walking from the center turning lane,” according to the release.

The incident happened in the 1100 Block of Gray Highway near a Dairy Queen just after 9:30 p.m.

Barnes was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation.

Hours later, the sheriff’s office was dispatched to a second pedestrian fatality on Interstate 16 near the Spring St. ramp just after 12 a.m. Wednesday.

The victim was identified as 38-year-old Leslie Wolfe, said Bibb County Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley. Anyone with information on how to reach Wolfe’s family is asked to contact Miley at 478-256--6714.

The driver of a 2005 Altima was traveling west on I-16 and did not see the man “walking in her lane of travel,” striking him, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the car was hurt and taken to a hospital, where she was in stable condition, the release said.
