LIVE UPDATES: Middle Georgia school closures due to coronavirus
To prevent the spread or limit the impact of COVID-19, most Middle Georgia school districts and universities have canceled classes or moved instruction online. The Telegraph has compiled a list of schools who have canceled classes or moved them online:
Public, private and charter schools
The Bibb County School District announced on March 16 that it would close starting March 17. “In the interim, students and teachers will be expected to participate in eLearning,” the district stated in a press release. “Students and staff should still plan to come to school today in order to prepare for and receive instructions and assignments. Information will be sent home with students today about the eLearning process to help assist parents as much as possible.”
Houston County Schools announced they would close March 16 and remain closed indefinitely.
Peach County Schools will close on March 17 and will be closed until further notice.
Monroe County Schools will institute a home learning program that will count as regular school days from March 16 through March 20. Additional plans will be made after next week.
Jones County Schools will be closed March 16 through March 20. Jones County Schools will provide meals for students during the closures at Gray Elementary School and Clifton Ridge Middle School from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Academy for Classical Education (ACE) charter school will close Tuesday, March 17 and reopen on March 30. Students will complete coursework remotely.
Cirrus Academy Charter School will be closed March 16-27 due to the coronavirus. The following week, March 30-April 4, is Spring Break.
First Presbyterian Day School has suspended on-campus classes between March 16 and March 20. Distance learning will begin March 17.
Stratford Academy will have a half-day on Monday, faculty and staff only will report on Tuesday and distance learning will begin on March 18.
Mount de Sales students and faculty will report on March 16 and 17. The school will close on March 18 and 19 before transitioning to distance learning beginning Friday, March 20. Distance learning will remain in place through March 27.
Covenant Academy will start distance learning on March 18. The current plan is for students to return back to class after spring break on April 6.
Windsor will decide the work hours on Wednesday, March 18. Students will report to class on Monday and Tuesday before switching to “alternative methods for education.”
Westfield will transition to virtual learning beginning March 18 and students will not report to school again until April 6.
Wilkinson County will not have class from March 17 through March 20. The district will decide further action on Friday, March 20.
Crawford County has canceled class from March 17 through the end of spring break on April 10.
Twiggs County is planning to meet on Monday, March 16 to decide what to do in response to COVID-19. Schools are currently open until further notice.
Tattnall Square Academy will use Monday, March 16 as a planning day before resuming regular school hours on March 17. Students will report to class on March 17 but will receive materials in case the school has to switch to distance learning.
Dublin will close schools from March 17 through March 27. The district will then decide what to do from that point forward.
Universities and colleges
- Mercer canceled classes until March 23 and will hold classes online until April 3, by which time the university will determine what to do with the rest of the spring semester.
University System of Georgia, which includes Macon’s Middle Georgia State University, will suspend classes for two weeks starting March 16.
- Central Georgia Technical College will be moving almost all instruction to online or a distance education format immediately until March 27, according to a news release. CGTC’s spring break from March 30-April 3 will continue as scheduled.
- All of Georgia Military College’s campuses, including the ones in Warner Robins and Milledgeville, have closed. Online learning will be held March 16-27.
Wesleyan College has extended spring break until at least March 22, and will alert students by March 23 what the school’s plan is for continuing courses.
After school programs
- Campus Clubs closed its doors March 16, and William White, chairman of the board, said they will remain closed for the foreseeable future. To stay up-to-date on when Campus Clubs will open, visit their Facebook page or call (478) 742-7794.
