Wesleyan College extending spring break, canceling classes due to coronavirus concerns

Wesleyan College in Macon announced Thursday evening it was extending spring break and canceling all in-person class meetings and college-sponsored activities until March 22 due to concerns about the new coronavirus.

The private college, founded in 1836, was the first college in world chartered to grant degrees to women. It’s 200-acre campus is located in North Macon in the Wesleyan College Historic District.

The University System of Georgia announced Thursday afternoon that its 26 institutions will suspend classes for two weeks starting March 16. That includes Middle Georgia State University, which has campuses in Macon, Cochran and other midstate cities.

Universities across the country are moving to online classes amid concerns about the spread of COVID-19. According to the most recent numbers from the state Department of Public Health, there are 31 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
