‘Heart breaking circumstances.’ Liquidation sale set for popular downtown Macon bistro
A popular family owned and operated Thai restaurant in downtown Macon is holding a liquidation sale as its owner battles stage 4 lung cancer.
The family had initially announced a temporary closure of Ladda Bistro at 442 Cherry St. not long after Chef Tom Sarrtsud received the unexpected diagnosis in March.
Chef Tom owns the bistro with his wife, Laddavan Sarrtsud. Their daughter, Jiin Sarrtsud, also works at the restaurant.
The liquidation sale is Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
The news has resulted in an outpouring of love and support from the community.
“This makes me so incredibly sad,” Kaylyn Miller-Benson posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “This was our go to special occasion brunch spot and was what mummy husband and kids did for me every Mother’s Day.
“Your food and your love touched so many. I hate to see it closed especially under such heart breaking circumstances.”
Adam Chulawat posted, “God bless you and your family! We grew up going to Ladda Thai, and will greatly miss this place.”
In another post, Jamie Waters wrote, “As a survivor, I know all too well that this news can be overwhelming. You’ve got this Chef Tom! Keep fighting the good fight!”
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help raise funds for Chef Tom’s medical care and other essential bills.
“As most of you know the restaurant was their main source of income,” the GoFundMe post reads. “Many people have asked how can they help, and this is how.
“They know they are in for an uphill battle, but that’s the only option they feel is best. Even if it’s only a few dollars, every little bit helps.”
An online Facebook raffle was also organized on Chef Tom’s behalf.
Additionally, the Sarrtsuds have a house for sale in Warner Robins near their home. Their daughter is a graduate of Northside High School.
Ladda Bistro celebrated its grand opening Dec. 2, 2016 in the same location of the Lemongrass that had closed earlier that year, according to Telegraph archives. The Sarrtsuds had been partners in the Lemongrass.
The bistro is located next to Theatre Macon.
The Sarrtsuds also previously owned and operated Ladda Thai, a restaurant in Warner Robins that closed in 2010. Liz Southern Cooking & Catering now operates out of that space at 1746 Watson Blvd., which the Sarrtsuds own and have put up for sale.
