Macon can soon enjoy an ‘extreme milkshake’ at this Georgia dessert spot’s new store
Just 2½ years ago, Vincent and Lakeisha Clayton of McDonough took the plunge into entrepreneurship — quitting their retail jobs on the same day and opening a dessert shop two months later in Locust Grove.
In February, the husband and wife team opened a second Cake ‘n Shake location in Warner Robins at 115 Margie Drive, Suite A.
Business was so brisk grand opening week that the dessert shop — known for its “extreme milkshakes” — ran out of ice cream. They next opened their McDonough location.
Now, the Claytons are expanding again, bringing their tasty concoctions of hand scooped ice cream from Georgia creameries blended into milkshakes topped to the extreme with a cupcake, slice of cheesecake and more to west Macon.
“We have a big following,” said Vincent Clayton, noting that a lot of their customers drive from Macon to the Warner Robins store.
New Macon shop
Located in Suite 100 at Tobesofkee Crossing, their new 1,500 square foot Cake ‘n Shake will mirror their popular Warner Robins shop. They’d hoped to open in December, but they’re now shooting for late January to early February.
The Macon location is brand new, which means they’re building it out — adding electrical and plumbing. The Warner Robins location previously was a restaurant, a former pizza joint, so it was a quicker turnaround.
Their most popular menu item remains the same since they opened their first shop.
Top sellers
Their top seller bears the name of the business. The Cake ‘n Shake extreme milkshake is a strawberry-banana blend topped with a slice of a New York style cheesecake, a vanilla cupcake and more.
Coming in a close second is the Gone Bananas extreme milkshake, a banana pudding shake with vanilla wafer cookies topped with whip cream, vanilla wafer crumbs and a banana pudding-filled cupcake.
Their beef hotdogs are also popular, and they’re adding loaded french fries with a variety of toppings to the menu. The fries will be cooked in an air fryer.
The menu also includes classic shakes such as chocolate, strawberry and other flavors as well as cake slices, cup cakes and ice cream by the scoop. They also serve Boba tea and dairy-free gelato.
The Claytons said the owner of Tobesofkee Crossing, who also owns the shopping center anchored by a Publix at their McDonough location, encouraged them to open the Cake-n-Shake at Tobesofkee Crossing.
“We’re so close to the lake right there,” Vincent Clayton said. “We’ve got schools. Let’s just open another one.”
The Claytons, who have three children, enjoy giving back to their communities by giving back a percentage of their sale revenues for schools and clubs that host spirit week events at their locations.
“We don’t turn anyone away,” Vincent Clayton said. “It helps us grow. It helps the schools with their goals. Everybody helps each other.”
The Claytons also are expanding closer to home.
They’re moving out of their original 1,700 square foot Locust Grove location into a 4,500 square foot space across the street at Tanger Outlets. They hope to open that location in time for the holiday season.
“We’re growing because our customers are always first,” he said.
