Military Salute: The Week of May 16

Resendiz

Airman Apprentice Magaly Resendiz, a Marietta native, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to USS Carl Vinson, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier operating out of San Diego, California.

Resendiz graduated from Osborne High School in 2025.

"I lived in a small town and saw most people content, not wanting to see and do more," Resendiz said. "It motivated me to get out of my comfort zone and to become better for my family and myself."

Resendiz joined the Navy nine months ago. Today, Resendiz serves as an aviation boatswain's mate (handling).

"I have always been fond of joining the military and setting the example as the oldest sister," Resendiz said.

Aircraft carriers are the centerpiece of America's naval forces. For over 100 years, they have projected power, sustained sea control, bolstered deterrence, provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and maintained enduring commitments worldwide.

Carl Vinson returned in August 2025 from a nine-month deployment to the U.S. 3rd, 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations, during which it conducted freedom of navigation operations, multinational exercises with U.S. allies and partners, and combat operations in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Back in its homeport of San Diego, Carl Vinson remains a combat-ready force dedicated to protecting and defending the U.S.

Among the largest warships in the world, USS Carl Vinson is longer than three football fields at 1,092 feet. The ship is 252 feet wide and weighs over 100,000 tons. Over 5,000 sailors serve aboard these self-contained mobile airports.

Resendiz has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

"I would say my biggest accomplishment is being the first female in my family to join the Navy," Resendiz said.

"Serving in the Navy means I'm able to prove myself and that I am useful," Resendiz said.

Resendiz is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

"I want to thank my mom for her support," Resendiz said. "It was already hard leaving everything behind, and her being able to support me from afar meant a lot for me."
