Large parties need advance approval in Fort Valley, police say. What we know
As the Labor Day weekend begins, Fort Valley residents need permission to party, according to an announcement made by the city’s police department Thursday.
Effective Friday, gatherings of 25 or more people now must be approved in advance by the Fort Valley Police Department, at least temporarily, officers said on Facebook.
“This measure is aimed at ensuring public safety and protecting the community,” the police department said. “By regulating large gatherings, public safety officials hope to manage potential risks and maintain a safe environment for all citizens.”
The Fort Valley City Council and Mayor Jeffery Lundy ordered a moratorium, or temporary ban, on “large unapproved parties” from Friday, Aug. 29, through Jan. 5, 2026, in the city, officers said.
However, the ban could be “extended or lifted earlier,” according to police.
Event organizers must obtain a “flash party” permit by submitting an application at least two weeks in advance, police said. It should note the event’s date, time, location, expected number of attendees and a safety or security plan, according to the Facebook post.
Applicants must receive written approval from Police Chief DJ Flores or City Administrator Gary Lee.
Without approval, violators could face fines, event shutdowns or possible legal action, according to the police department.
Officers hope the new rule will “prevent unsafe crowding, reduce noise and disturbances, (and) protect emergency services from being overwhelmed,” FVPD said.
It was unclear Friday whether a particular incident triggered the ban.
Anyone with questions about the new rule is encouraged to call the police department at 478-825-3383.
This is a developing story.
