Construction will leave lanes on I-75 and I-16 closed, affect Macon traffic. What to know
The Georgia Department of Transportation is warning Macon drivers to expect traffic changes and lane closures this week.
The first closure starts this week and will be in the right lane on the entrance ramp to I-16 east coming out of the I-16/I-75 interchange, GDOT said in a news release. The lane will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday this week.
GDOT also said drivers in the left lanes of I-16 west will be pushed to the right lanes, starting just before the exit to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and up to Spring Street. This change will begin Friday at 10 p.m.
Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 west on-ramp remains closed, as well as the right lane on the on-ramp itself. GDOT said in the release the lanes will be closed for “several months.”
The closures are subject to change if there are issues with weather or on-site conditions.
The shifts are due to the ongoing I-16/1-75 Interchange Improvement Project, which is a seven-phase project that first broke ground in 2017. Currently, it is on phases four and five.
GDOT estimates that the project will be completed by the end of 2030, although most of the road work will be done by 2026.
