Across the country, retailers are cutting people and closing stores, but work on the previously announced Dick’s Sporting Goods store in north Bibb County is moving along on schedule.
Construction on the new 45,000-square-foot building at The Shoppes at River Crossing began the last week of December, and the store is expected to open in late summer or early fall, said Bill Baker, senior general manager of the shopping center.
In addition, a Gap store is expected to open at River Crossing at the end of February, Baker said.
“It’s encouraging that stores continue to be built,” he said. “I think it’s a testament to the ongoing success that we’ve had since we opened (in March).”
Between 30 to 60 full- and part-time workers will be employed at the new Dick’s store, said Jeff Hennion, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for the Pittsburgh-based sporting goods retailer.
The existing Dick’s in the Eisenhower Crossing shopping center will remain open, Hennion said.
Employees from the current store will be given the opportunity to transfer to the new store if it’s closer to their home or if they just prefer to work there, he said.
The new location was announced in September.
“In general, we’ve had great success in the Macon area with the initial store,” Hennion said.
Dick’s is a full-line sporting goods retailer offering a variety of equipment, apparel and footwear, according to the company’s Web site. The company operated 357 stores in 38 states as of August.
