In hopes of easing congestion on state highways and interstates during the Labor Day weekend, Georgia transportation officials are suspending lane closures.

The suspension of blocking lanes for, where possible, construction or most other reasons goes into effect Friday at noon and lasts until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The officials said in a statement at midweek that “heaviest traffic volumes” are most likely on Friday when “motorists can expect to add 30-45 minutes to the their travel times.”

Meanwhile, the Georgia Department of Public Safety in a news release earlier this week said state troopers and other law enforcement officers would be on the roads conducting “highly visible patrols ... looking for unsafe behaviors that put travelers at risk.”

The officers were said to be focusing on “impaired drivers, speeders, distracted drivers, and violations.”
