A hearty breakfast anytime you want it. New Waffle House in Perry sets opening date
A Georgia-grown iconic restaurant chain known for its extensive breakfast menu and 24/7 365-day service is opening a new store in Perry.
The new Waffle House at 251 Perry Parkway is expected to open March 20, which is subject to change but that’s the target date, according to a company spokeswoman.
The new restaurant will be the fourth Waffle House to open in Perry. It’s near the Paradise Shoppes of Perry, a shopping plaza anchored by a Publix. The other Waffle Houses in Perry are at 1426 Sam Nunn Blvd., 300 AG Village Blvd. and 102 Lect Drive.
On Labor Day weekend 1955, neighbors Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner opened their first 24-hour, dine-in restaurant in Avondale Estates. Today, just over 2,000 Waffle Houses are spread over 25 states, with about 440 in Georgia.
Hearty breakfast
Among the hearty breakfast options is the All Star Special of eggs with toast and jelly, choice of grits, hash browns or sliced tomatoes, a waffle and choice of three slices of Smithfield bacon, two patties of Jimmy Dean sausage or hickory smoked ham.
The classic cream waffle can be topped with chocolate or peanut butter chips, while the pecan option is the classic waffle with pecan pieces baked inside, according to the menu.
Hash browns are cooked on a griddle until golden brown and crispy but can be ordered soft or customized by adding toppings such as smothered with grilled onions, covered with melted American cheese, chunked with grilled pieces of hickory smoked ham and more.
The menu features other breakfast favorites such as steak and eggs, hash brown bowls, grits bowls, breakfast sandwiches and melts, lunch and dinner offerings such as Texas melts, 100% Angus beef burgers and sandwiches, including a grilled chicken sandwich.
The restaurant chain has its own Waffle House Museum, which is open by appointment only for tours in Decatur. It’s the first store with the interior recreated to capture what it was like in the beginning.
Nearby development
The new Waffle House also is near the Perry Parkway Project, two shopping plazas under development by the Dhan Group on 4.1 acres at the corner of Houston Lake Road and Perry Parkway.
The plaza closest to the intersection is expected to be anchored by a convenience store and gas station. A Dunkin’ with a drive-thru and a Baskin-Robbins shop inside is also going into the shopping center, along with a breakfast spot. One space remains available.
A Surcheros Fresh Mex, Holy Pie! Pizzeria, a Flo & Glo IV Wellness Lounge, a pharmacy with a drive-thru, and a nail salon are going into the second plaza.
Kyle and Debbie Cullars of Milledgeville are opening with their sons, Taylor and Connor, their third Surcheros in a 3,400-square-foot space of the shopping plaza.
Kyle Cullars expects the space will be turned over to the family to begin the interior work by the end of March, with the new Tex-Mex restaurant possibly opening by mid-summer. With so many moving parts, it’s too soon to announce a target opening date, he said.
Also, coming nearby is The Encore, a housing development of single-family homes and townhomes at 1824 Houston Lake Road near the intersection of Houston Lake and Lake Joy roads.
