‘Double Ace: The Life of Robert Lee Scott Jr., Pilot, Hero, and Teller of Tall Tales’
By Robert Coram of Atlanta
336 pages, $19.75 (St. Martin’s Press)
What it’s about: Robert Scott grows up in Macon, goes to West Point and marries a girl from Fort Valley. In 1942 Scott goes to China, flies with Claire Chennault, becomes a double ace, and then comes home and writes “God Is My Co-Pilot.” As a civilian, he walks the Great Wall of China, and in his 80s and 90s is the force behind creating and growing the Museum of Aviation at Robins Air Force Base.
The author says: My favorite fact in the book is that Chennault and Scott were both small town Southerners who became like brothers.
