Three Years Ago Today, Capcom Released One of its Biggest Failures

In 2026, Capcom is often referred to as "Capgod" by its dedicated fans. Since the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the RE Engine back in 2017, the company has been riding a wave of consistent high-quality releases, like Resident Evil 2 remake, Pragmata, and Dragon's Dogma 2. However, three years ago, Capcom released a game that was not only met with a negative reception, but it was also a slap in the face to some fans who desperately want a now-dormant Capcom IP to make a comeback.

Today, July 14, 2026, marks the three-year anniversary of the release of Exoprimal, a multiplayer extraction shooter in which players team up to fight dinosaurs and another team of players in a PvPvE setup. Featuring three character classes, the main game mode is called Dino Survival and sees players complete assigned objectives like defeating specific dinosaurs or fighting the opposing team.

According to Metacritic, Exoprimal is sitting at a divided 67 Metascore, with the user score also sitting at a 5.4. Critics were generally impressed by the game's class system, but criticized the game's lack of content and multiplayer progression, with many finding the game to be too repetitive to fully recommend.

Despite selling nearly 1 million copies in just two months and generating almost $2 million in revenue, according to GameSensor, Capcom ended content updates and support for the game in July 2024, just one year after release.

Notably, some fans were put off by the idea of a multiplayer extraction shooter involving dinosaurs, as the rumors and fan demand for a remake of the classic Dino Crisis series were becoming more rampant. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the producer of the Dino Crisis series, was also involved in the production of Exoprimal.

For now, Exoprimal is still playable online, but according to SteamDB, there are currently only 13 players in the world playing the game, as of this writing, so fans may have an issue finding teams to play with and against.
